Six Pack in Six Months (#6P6M) - what was it all about?

As you might be aware in September (2012) I set a target to develop a six pack in six months... why? ... well I have never had one and I wanted to achieve this in my 50th year... I must admit I didn't really appreciate 'how hard' it would be but... having spawned the idea in my head, it wasn't going away... (that's not me by the way on the right...

So what were the lessons learned during the 6 months? what did the journey reveal to me?

The first challenge was getting myself excited about the project. I'm not a natural when it comes to working out, so for me to keep momentum on something like this I need to build up the interest level so that it does not fall away. How could I achieve that?

  1. Make it public... by deciding to post every step of the way onto the +Link4Growth forum blog, I was sharing my journey with everyone else... it meant to me that I was no longer just letting myself down, but everyone else too... how could I, he who wields the words 'do what you say you will do'... be able to now fail in my task... huge motivation for me...
  2. Get some new equipment... using new equipment to assist me in a project, whatever it is, always enthuses me to stick with things... it is not the financial commitment necessarily (although that helps), it is finding out and learning about new things (in this case something to help achieve the goal) that increases my excitement
  3. Associate yourself with people who have already succeeded... in this case enlisting the professional guidance of my nephew (Martin Dealey) who is a qualified personal trainers and nutritionist...

So just looking through the above, looking back at it... I didn't actually think about what I was doing, it kind of made sense, but when analysing it, I was setting myself up for success... Huge motivation, tools to do the job and professional help from those who could guide me on the journey...

We can put this into everything that we do in life, losing weight, fitness, but it applies absolutely in business doesn't it? Think about your endeavours for a minute... how committed to success are you? What have you put in place to make sure that you are motivated to succeed... this is the 'Why' are you doing it... for me there were numerous Why's... (a) I wanted to do this in my 50th year, and time was ticking (b) I never had a 6 pack ever, and that was going to change (c) I know that if I am in peak condition I can be better at what I do (d) By sharing the journey with everyone, there is no place to hop off anymore...

Next... get the right equipment to make sure you are able to complete the task... in business this might be education, computer equipment, tools... you just won't succeed if you do not have the tools to do the work... so find out what you need and make sure that they are in place...

Finally... professional help... this really is the easy one nowadays... with +Link4Growth  there is always someone out there that has the knowledge you need... find the person, you may have to pay for their services (you won't value it if it costs nothing)...

So what now for my #6P6M programme? Well it continues... I did not achieve the Six Pack in Six Months... did I fail? No... it just would take a bit longer than I expected... perhaps 8 months... the bottom line is that it WILL HAPPEN... the time was just a function of how much I could slot into my already full schedule and where I started from...

So the journey continues... I have also settled by affair with Booze along the way... really like the changes in my body shape such that I will never go back to the behaviours that led to where I was before... and I feel more able to fulfil the purpose that I believe I am here for...

That is what I have learned from the #6P6M programme!
